Making Blocks

Description

The purpose of this assignment is to introduce the concept of blocks and wblocks in AutoCAD. You will use previously created drawing files to practice making blocks.

Objectives/Outcomes and Assessment Criteria

• Demonstrate an understanding of AutoCAD through the generation of an architecturally-related drawing assignment.

• Print a PDF file of the drawing.

• Demonstrate craftsmanship as manifest through precision of the drawing.

• Document completed assignments in a digital format and archive those digital artifacts in MIro and Google Drive.

General Instructions

Over the years, I developed the following definitions to help students understand the concepts of blocks and wblocks:

Block - a drawing within a drawing file

Wblock - a drawing file; any file with a dwg extension

General Instructions

1. You need to open previously completed drawing files and make blocks out of the drawn objects within the individual files. Be ready to insert the blocks into the upcoming floor plan drawing file. Making blocks will save you time in completing the floor plan.

2. Here are some suggestions for naming the blocks inside the drawing files:

• Sofa and Rug.dwg

  • Make a block out of the 3-seat sofa only. Name: Sofa 3-seat

• Kitchen Fixtures.dwg

  • Make a block out of the refrigerator. Name: Refrigerator 30 inch

  • Make a block out of the stove. Name: Stove Electric 30 inch

  • Make a block out of the sink. Name: Sink Kitchen 33 inch

• Doors.dwg

  • Make a block out of the typical door. Name: Door 30 inch

  • Make a block out of the typical bifold door. Name: Door Bifold 48 inch

  • Make a block out of the typical (sliding) door. Name: Door Sliding 72 inch

• Entourage.dwg

  • Make blocks out of the 4 trees in plan view. Names: Tree Plan 01, Tree Plan 02, Tree Plan 03, Tree Plan, 04

  • Make blocks out of the 3 trees in elevation view. Names: Tree Elevation 01, Tree Elevations 02, Tree Elevation 03

  • Make a block out of the 2 shrubs in elevation view. Names: Shrub Elevation 01, Shrub Elevation 02

Once you've made these blocks in the drawing files, upload the drawing files again to your shared google drive. Let the revised drawing files replace the original drawing files.

There may be more blocks to make as we continue with the floor plan, elevations, and section drawings.
