Course Supplements

The following items will be needed for the course.

Optional Textbooks:

Laseau, Paul. Freehand Sketching: An Introduction. New York: Norton, ISBN: 9780393731125.

Campanario, Gabriel. The Urban Sketching Handbook: Architecture And Cityscapes : Tips And Techniques For Drawing On Location. 978-1592539611.

USB Flash Drive, also commonly known as a jumpdrive, pen stick, memory sticks, thumb drive, etc.

This device will be used to transfer scanned drawings to the Google Drive. You don't need to purchase a USB flash drive for this class if you already have one.

Note: It is not recommended that you use a USB flash drive as a storage place for your work, because they are far too easy to lose.  You are encouraged to back up your scans to a personal computer or other device instead.

Sketchbook

  • Size: 8" x 10", 9" x 12" or somewhere in between.
  • The paper should be smooth without a lot of tooth, but not slippery smooth. The label should say that it is intended for pencil and ink.
  • The sketchbook needs to lay flat without closing when it is placed on a horizontal surface and opened to a page . A spiral binding would allow for this, but other types might be fine too.
  • 80-100 sheets. You could buy a smaller one and purchase another later if you need it. It's ok to get more than one type so you can experiment with different papers.
  • The paper weight should be 65 lbs. or greater.
  • The sheets should not have a grid.
  • The binding can be on the long edge or the short edge.
  • Hardcovers are more durable, but softcovers are fine if you are careful with them. You can also put the sketchbook in something to protect it.
  • Some brands include Bee Paper, Bienfang, Blick, Canson, Cachet, and Strathmore.

Technical Ink Pens

  • Black ink in varying thicknesses as noted below.
  • Avoid markers that will bleed through the paper.
  • Avoid rolling ball pens.
  • If possible, try the pens in the store. Sometimes paper is left near the pen display for testing. If you are unsure whether this is allowed, ask a salesperson.
  • Some brand suggestions available at Blick Art Supply are shown below. My preference is the Sakura Pigman Micron pen (tip thicknesses: 01, 03 and 08), and the Pigma Graphic 1, but others are available.

Pencils for sketching

  • One 2H pencil (notice the designations on the pencils in the image below).
  • Wood pencils, not the mechanical type.
  • Some brands include Derwent, Staedler, Faber-Castell, and Blick.

Eraser

  • Vinyl.
  • Some brands included Alvin, Faber-Castell, Prismacolor and Maped.

Pencil Sharpener

  • Portable.
  • With container to receive shavings.

Colored Pencils

Colors needed: red, blue, yellow, orange, purple, green, brown, black, white, light gray, medium gray, dark gray. You may find that buying a set is less expensive than purchasing individual pencils. You may need to purchase the gray pencils separately.

The recommended brand is Prismacolor. Alternatives include Derwent and Blick. Brands like Crayola should be avoided because they do not mix well. There are sets that will include all or most of the colors listed above and may be less expensive than buying them individually. You may need to purchase the grays separately.

Container for Supplies

  • Large enough to hold all of your items except the sketchbook.
  • Clear plastic is recommended so you can see the items inside.
  • With zipper or other closing device.
